Pflugerville safety impresses at camp
Pflugerville safety Alex Matlock took a visit to College Station Sunday to work out in front of the Texas A&M coaching staff at their first summer one-day camp. Entering the camp there were questions to whether the 6-foot-4, 190-pound defender would translate to linebacker or safety at the next level, but that question was answered Sunday.
"The entire time I was at safety," Matlock said. "I love safety, that is my favorite position, but if someone wants me to play at a different position I could make the adjustment."
Matlock spoke briefly with a few of the coaches after the camp, including outside linebacker coach, Nick Toth, who is his area recruiter.
"They liked me at the camp," Matlock said. "They looked over my film and game tape they just needed to go back over things and talk amongst each other and figure out what they would like to do."
While at the camp Matlock had the opportunity to talk to some current A&M commits and a few other players in attendance.
"I got to talk to Devonta Burns and I got to talk to JeMarcus Johnson and of course Jonathon Henderson," he said. "I asked them about the campus life and what they liked about A&M. It is nice talking to those guys and hearing about what they went through and why they like A&M."
While Matlock was not sure when he would hear from the A&M coaches, he already has plans to visit other camps this summer.
"I'm just going to wait and see what happens with A&M," he said. "In the mean time I am going to go to some other camps, especially the upcoming week. I'm going to SMU, Rice, TCU, Baylor and UofH. That is pretty much the end of camps and I will make a decision by the end of the summer."
Matlock has time for camps, despite competing with the Pflugerville 7-on-7 team, because they have already qualified for the state finals.
"We won our pool in the Westwood Tournament," he said. "Now we are just waiting on the State Championship Tournament in College Station in July."
