Monday Morning Quarterback with Romaro Miller
Let's start this thing talking about the crowd.
It exceeded my expectations and was wild throughout the day Saturday -- probably about 50,000. The Ole Miss fans made a statement, and it's amazing what we're beginning to do with all hands on deck.
We've talked for a long time how you have to have support from everybody to make it happen, and that's happening from fans to the football team and the football coaches. I think the game was an indication of us being incredibly jacked up from the first play, and on the opposite sideline probably not as much with it being Pitt's third year in a row.
However, our guys took that atmosphere and had a point to prove. It was exciting from the first snap, and it wouldn't have mattered what Pitt's motivation level was in that one. Ole Miss was really impressive from a physical standpoint and just beat them up.
A lot has been said about what this means for the program, and it starts with the seniors and getting those guys out with a win - a blowout win. They've supported the university and seen the good and the bad, and the last note is the right note. It's hopefully something they can remember for the rest of their lives. Now it's a chance for the juniors to take the mantle and pick up on that leadership and keep everything moving in this direction.
It's been such a great week for Ole Miss. You heard all those guys at the Under Armour game mentioning Ole Miss, and they probably turned on ESPN Saturday and saw a dominating performance. Against a team that took Notre Dame to overtime, Ole Miss took charge and dominated. That's a perception that can be sold.
I was incredibly proud of quarterback Bo Wallace. He's such a tough kid. I've heard stories about the shoulder, and hopefully the doctors do a great job getting him back as soon as possible. He played through a lot of pain, and I'm incredibly grateful he's the quarterback at Ole Miss.
From a program standpoint, I've told everybody how this has changed in a year. Go back a little more than one year, and we had everybody in separate directions. Now we're together and headed in the right direction. We have the correct collection of people to lead us into the future. You can just see it, and the sky is the limit. I could tell it was changing as soon as Hugh Freeze was hired. He had something invested in the program with his dad and brother and everybody. If he loses a game, his family will ask what's going on, and they truly care. It wasn't like that some previous staffs.
And then you have Matt Luke and Grant Heard, guys that put their blood and sweat out there for Ole Miss. I don't know what's going to happen, but you're not going to outwork them.
As for next year, just want to see the time continue to improve. This group was the program builder. They laid a foundation, and now it's on to the next guys. We have to add more pieces for 2013 and hopefully look back in a few years and realize just how special this first group was to get it going.
