STATESBORO, Ga. ? Sophomore Jonathan Randolph fired a 3-under 69 in the final round of the Schenkel E-Z Go Invitational Sunday, to take third place and lead the Ole Miss men’s golf team at the Forest Heights Country Club.
Randolph, a native of Brandon, Miss., stood outside the top 10 heading into the final round, but posted seven birdies to secure the third place finish at 213. He finished one back of the runner-up and four back of the tournament winner, N.C. State’s Matt Hill. The third place finish marks Randolph’s best showing this season as a Rebel and his third career top-five and sixth career top-10 performance.
As a team, Ole Miss couldn’t quite make a move on Saturday or Sunday, and ended up finishing eighth in the 18-team field, with an 881. The elite field featured six teams in the top 25, including the Rebels, who were ranked No. 21 going into the tournament.
“It was a pretty mediocre tournament overall for our team,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “The course had some tricks on the greens, and we made too many errors-too many double bogeys and three-putts.
“Jonathan had his best tournament of the year, and I wish we had supported his play better. We started three freshmen and a sophomore, and at times our inexperience showed. It was a good learning experience, but we need to improve quickly. The toughest part of our season is upon us.”
One of those freshmen, Joe David, carded a final round 73 after Saturday’s 67, to post a three-day total of 217, missing the top 10 by two. He tied for 14th, for his sixth top-20 showing of the year.
South Carolina (865) held off Tennessee and North Carolina State by two to win the team title. Florida took third and Kentucky finished fifth.
The Rebels will be back in action April 6-7 when they host the second annual Reunion Intercollegiate at Reunion Country Club in Madison, Miss.
