Harris loves Spartan tradition

On Monday Michigan State got a double dose of good news with the commitments of Trey Kilgore and Jay Harris. SpartanMag.com caught up with Harris and got some details about why Michigan State University is the place for him.

The last 4 years Michigan State has been the most successful team in the Big Ten. At the same time the Spartans have put multiple wide receivers in the NFL. That combination is something that Harris is well aware of and made Michigan State University an attractive location for a player with his talent.

"It is a great honor to be committed to Michigan State," Harris said. "The Spartan tradition in football has always been a big one and I am just glad to be a part of it. Michigan State has a beautiful campus. I built a great relationship with the coaches and the academics are top notch."

The commitment of Harris took some by surprise due to the fact that many believed that Michigan State would likely only take 1 wide receiver for the class of 2013. Scholarships are at a premium in a class that could measure only 15 or 16 players. However, when coaches saw an opportunity to get a player they have near the top of their board they do not pass it up. That is apparently what happened with Harris. Spartan Head Coach Mark Dantonio and his staff view Harris as a player that could help keep them at the top of the Big Ten and they were excited to take his commitment. SpartanMag.com talked with Harris about his college decision, the role he will play at Michigan State and the other schools that courted him.

"I talked with Coach Dantonio and Coach Warner," Harris stated. "They were both very happy. I will be playing wide receiver as well as punt and kick returns. They like the fact that I bring speed and agility to the position and that I have that I have the ability to generate yards after the catch. I also had scholarship offers from Penn State, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Rutgers, temple and Old Dominion."

Harris indicated that he is looking forward to getting back on campus this fall to see the Spartans in action. Downingtown East High School plays all of its games on Friday night so Harris will have an opportunity to attend a Saturday night game like the one scheduled against Notre Dame.

Harris becomes the second Pennsylvania product to commit to the Spartans for the class of 2013. Harris joins quarterback Damion Terry of Erie Cathedral Prep High School as part of the class and the two have been in contact with each other. Coach Dave Warner served as the primary recruiter of Harris for the Spartans and this marks the 3rd straight year he has gotten a commitment from Eastern Pennsylvania to attend Michigan State University.
