Two freshmen dismissed from Diamond Rebs

Two freshmen projected to make immediate impacts for the Ole Miss baseball team will not even be on the Rebels' roster when the season starts in February.

Outfielder Zach Lowery and infielder Evan Frazar have been dismissed from the team, due to a violation of team rules, according to head coach Mike Bianco. Ole Miss will not be able to replace the pair on the 35-man roster or in the maximum allotment of 27 scholarship players for 2009-2010.

"I wish (Lowery) nothing but the best," said David Renfroe, the former Ole Miss signee, who planned to be Lowery's roommate before signing with the Boston Red Sox. "Even great kids make mistakes."

Frazar, a native of Houston (St. Pius X), Texas, was a candidate for extensive playing time at several infield positions, and Lowery, out of Atlanta, had a productive fall, throwing his name into the battle for a wide-open outfield.

Frazar hit .297 this fall with five doubles, two home runs and two RBI. The speedy high-profile newcomer stole five-of-six bases, struck out 11 times and worked seven free passes. Lowery hit .316, also contributed five doubles and two home runs and was perfect on six stolen base chances. He walked six times and stuck out 10.

Lowery was the No. 121 overall prospect nationally in the 2009 class by Perfect Game, and the same publication listed Frazar at No. 92. Frazar was also an Under Armour All-America selection in 2008.

Frazar chose Ole Miss over Texas A&M, LSU, Arizona State and Miami. Lowery picked the Rebels over Tennessee.
