Moore picks Virginia

On Friday morning, four-star DeMatha defensive end Michael Moore committed to the University of Virginia, effectively ending the recruiting process and giving the Cavaliers a commitment that means a great deal to them on a number of levels.

CavsCorner spoke with the 6-foot-4, 255-pound lineman shortly after his decision and he was still excited about his choice.

Moore called UVa head coach Mike London around 10 a.m. and informed him that he would be attending Virginia. Needless to say, London was ecstatic, as were the other members of the UVa coaching staff.

"I talked to Coach London, Coach (Anthony) Poindexter, Coach (Jeff) Hanson and Coach (Jim) Reid," Moore explained. "I just talked to all of them and told them I'm ready to commit. They were all excited about it."

As a legacy recruit whose parents both attended UVa, Moore's commitment was especially sweet for his father, former UVa great and current assistant coach Shawn Moore.

"He was excited as a coach and as a father," Moore said. "He knows it's a good fit for me and he's happy for me."

It's easy to understand why the coaches are so excited. In recent weeks, it became apparent that Moore had narrowed his focus to Virginia and Florida.

On the one hand, Virginia offered him a comfort level that was difficult to match. On the other hand, Florida has put together a resume as impressive as just about anyone in the BCS era.

So, in Moore's mind, what did it come down to?

"Basically, it's just that family atmosphere and that tradition of football they have there," he said. "It's basically me knowing them and knowing everybody down there. Those were the big things for me."

How tight was it in the end between the Cavs and Gators?

"Probably this whole week I've been thinking about Florida and Virginia," he continued. "I was just trying to figure out which school was best for me. I knew both were good schools football wise and academically. I knew it was going to come down to that gut feeling and that's what it was in the end."

Moore said he is solidly committed to the Cavaliers and now he'll help the UVa staff continue their momentum with the class of 2012.

"I'm doing do try to do a little recruiting for them," he said with a laugh.

Moore is the seventh member of Virginia's class and the second four-star prospect.
