Big Dawg Camp top performers part II

Mississippi State hosted some of their top prospects Friday night under the lights at Davis Wade Stadium for their invitation only Big Dawg Camp.

The Bulldogs turned their big weekend into commitments landing four over a four-day span. Rivals.com was on-hand with four staffers for the camp and brings you the first of a three part series of some of the night's top performances in alphabetical order.

Ryan Brown

Position: Strongside defensive end

Height: 6-5

Weight: 240

School/ Hometown: Archbishop Shaw/ Marerro, La.

Offers: Committed to Mississippi State

Logan's take: Brown was actually a little bigger that I expected when I saw him in person. He is very explosive off the ball and also showcased some moves at the point of attack. Brown is able to shed blocks effectively which will only serve to his advantage at the next level. He also showed some athleticism off the edge proving he can defend the run as well as rush the passer. Brown hung out with several other Louisiana standouts on hand like fellow commits Quadry Antoine and Torrey Bell as well as Marcel Andry and Royce LaFrance.

Kivon Coman

Position: Safety

Height: 6-1

Weight: 185

School/ Hometown: Florence/ Florence, Ala.

Offers: Arkansas State, Mississippi State, South Alabama, South Florida

Logan's take: Coman came to camp looking for a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs. Obviously he got the job done because Coman was informed he indeed had received an offer from MSU on Monday. He is a long lean safety that looks like he could easily play corner as well. Coman may not receive the attention he deserves sharing the secondary with teammate Beniquez Brown but there is no doubt he has what it take to excel at the next level as well.

Devon Desper

Position: Center

Height: 6-4

Weight: 295

School/ Hometown: Madison Central/ Madison, Miss.

Offers: Committed to Mississippi State

Logan's take: Friday was my first opportunity to watch Desper in person. He was a good bit bigger than I was expecting. He's got a good interior lineman frame. You could tell there was some rust Desper had from missing time during his junior season due to injury. He went head-to-head with some of the top d-linemen on-hand and held his own. Channing Ward was the only player I saw him struggle against.

Lelland Ducksworth

Position: Outside linebacker

Height: 6-1

Weight: 215

School/ Hometown: North Forrest/ Hattiesburgh, Miss.

Offers: Arkansas State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss

Logan's take: I've seen Ducksworth in person several times and also watched his film but Friday was the first time I've seen him perform live. He is a very athletic and quick linebacker but needs to continue to bulk up as his career progresses. But he actually weighs more than he appears. I would have loved to see him lower the boom at the camp but he certainly proved he has the cover skills at linebacker.

Deonte Evans

Position: Athlete

Height: 5-11

Weight: 198

School/ Hometown: McComb/ McComb, Miss.

Offers: Committed to Mississippi State

Logan's take: It was my third opportunity to see Evans but only first to see him perform. He was a lot faster in person than he even looks on his highlight film…and that's fast. He clocked in with a 4.36 forty time inside the Palmeiro Center. I believe safety is where he will ultimately end up and could potentially be one of the real sleepers of this class for the Bulldogs. I also got a chance to meet his dad and he looks like he could still suit up and play as well.

Travonte Fenton

Position: Safety

Height: 5-11

Weight: 180

School/ Hometown: Oak Grove/ Hattiesburg, Miss.

Offers: Arkansas State, Southern Miss

Logan's take: Fenton appeared to be your prototypical high school cornerback which should help as a ball-hawking safety in coverage. He will need to continue to bulk up to play safety at the next level but the good news is that Fenton does not shy away from contact. He just seems to have a knack of finding the football in the air and making a play. He is a true playmaker and might be one of the more underrated talents in the state this year.

Cordarrly Gaines

Position: Offensive tackle

Height: 6-5

Weight: 320

School/ Hometown: Provine/ Jackson, Miss.

Offers: Arkansas, Arkansas State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee

Logan's take: Gaines was probably the biggest surprise in my eyes at the camp. I had seen him several times in the past and knew how massive he was but I was shocked at how well he moves for a guy his size. He has worked on shedding some weight and made progress in that area but much is still needed. But Gaines has incredibly long arms and uses his wingspan to fend off defenders and seems to have a strong upper body.

Nardo Govan

Position: Tight end

Height: 6-3

Weight: 225

School/ Hometown: Savannah Christian School/ Savannah, Ga.

Offers: Mississippi State

Logan's take: I thought that Govan was the most impressive prospect in the tight ends group. He has a big, tall frame and showed the ability to go up and get a football. Govan reminded me a lot of 2011 tight end prospect David Reeves being a bit of a sleeper but immensely talented. I was a bit surprised the Bulldogs did not land a commitment from him over the weekend. I'm shocked other schools have not gotten involved in his recruitment at this point.

Brandon Holloway

Position: Athlete

Height: 5-9

Weight: 155

School/ Hometown: Alonso/ Tampa, Fla.

Offers: Committed to Mississippi State

Logan's take: Holloway is the definition of a burner. This guy can absolutely fly. He may not be the biggest guy you've ever seen but when you run as fast as Holloway does it simply doesn't matter what size you are because it's going to be hard to catch him. He has incredible acceleration and is nearly untouchable in the open field. His straight line speed is some of the best I've seen from a high school prospect.

Nick James

Position: Defensive tackle

Height: 6-5

Weight: 335

School/ Hometown: Long Beach/ Long Beach, Miss.

Offers: Arkansas State, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee

Logan's take: I was very impressed with what I saw from James. He has shed some weight from last season which has only made him quicker and more explosive off the ball. James seemed to have an inner drive that you would love as a coach. He was motivating the other players during drills and then dominating the drills once he got involved. There was not an offensive lineman that I saw that could tame him. His name rightfully deserves to be among the top prospects in the state.

A.J. Jefferson

Position: Strongside defensive end

Height: 6-4

Weight: 240

School/ Hometown: North Pike/ Summitt, Miss.

Offers: Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss

Logan's take: Jefferson was yet another superbly talented defensive lineman on-hand. He proved he is among the elite prospects in the Magnolia State. Jefferson is a solidly built defensive end that comes off the edge with both speed and power. Jefferson is raw and needs some polishing in some areas but the talent is definitely there. I expect him to be a heck of a college football player in the future.
