Coach raves about newest pledge

Auburn continued its solid start to the 2013 recruiting class on Monday, as one of the nation's top junior linebackers pledged to the Tigers after a weekend visit with his father.

Central Gwinnett High School head coach Todd Wofford thinks Trey Johnson is a big time addition both on, and off the field.

"The biggest thing he brings to the table is that he is so intense," Wofford said. "He's everything you want in a linebacker. He is a sure tackler a big hitter, he can run, and he's a natural leader."

Wofford said Johnson held close to 25 scholarship offers from schools across the country.

After watching Johnson record an astounding 152 tackles and 21 tackles for loss as a sophomore, Wofford is convinced Johnson is the type linebacker that can do it all.

"He's a combination of both a run stopper, and a sideline to sideline player," Wofford said. "From last year's film, he's improved so much. He's a sideline to sideline guy, but he can also stuff the middle, he can blow up the guard or tackle when thy are pulling on counter plays."

Wofford believes Johnson's skill set, combined with his attitude and leadership qualities, make him a prospect that you can build a more than a defense around.

"Not just on the defense side, he's such a vocal leader that he basically runs the whole team," said Wofford. "He's in the middle of everything that goes on. He's the enforcer of making sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do.

"In the weight room, he's intense. He can always improve, but he's taking steps to become the best leader he can be. When a new kid joins the football team, he's one of the first kids to talk to him and see who they are, get to know them."

Wofford believes despite the early commitment from Johnson, he will hold true to his word as the recruiting process goes on.

"He's the kind of kid that will stick with it," Wofford said. "He wanted to get done with it, he's a serious, focused kid off the field. He's not really into the recruiting game. Once he went to a few different schools and started seeing things he liked and didn't like, and he found what he was looking for.

"He's now focused on recruiting the best players he can over to Auburn with him."
