Monday Morning Quarterback with Romaro Miller

I've said this before, but I think it's time to repeat it.

Coming into the season I had a number in my head as far as wins. It was three wins, and I really believed that.

Then two weeks ago I would have said if we don't win seven games, then I'll be upset. During the season my mindset changed. But we are letting our own expectations and excitement cloud some things.

Our guys went out Saturday and gave effort and let one slip away. Nothing you can do about it but go to practice and go to work. On Sunday morning, I was sitting around and it hit me again how this isn't a one-year rebuilding process for the university.

It takes time, and we've made tremendous strides. It's somewhat of a rollercoaster right now, but you just have to hold on and stay course.

It was a huge recruiting weekend with visitors, and I can easily recall five or so recruits who must be thinking they can help this team right. Recruits see opportunity. If some of those recruits in the stands had been on the field Saturday, the game would have been over.

It's coming. Fans are going to have to be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day, and this program be built in a year. Recruiting is the way you build it back, and I believe we're doing incredibly well there.

I love this team, and I love these kids. I love the way our kids have competed, but let's look at it a little bit. Louis Covington is a great kid. He goes to practice and absolutely works his tail off, so please don't take this as a shot at him, but how many places does a walk-on newcomer crack the starting lineup? Again, he's maximizing his opportunity, and you respect the heck out of that. He can help us, but the generic description just goes to show the state of the program as far as depth.

Cody Prewitt is down there running on punt and kickoff teams, and then he plays most of the game at safety. These guys get tired, and it shows where we are right now. What we can do is rally around this team and these coaches. That's what recruits see. They hear cheers and see the atmosphere. That's how we can tangibly help.

If I was Joe Blow defensive end or Joe Blow cornerback looking on the field, I would see how they are one piece away, and the guys out there are playing their butts off. Playing time is huge for recruits, and that's what the coaches are selling. Our guys are doing what we hoped for: They're not laying down. Look, last night wasn't fun. Losing to Louisiana Tech last year wasn't fun. Getting blown out by LSU last year wasn't fun, but you have to be able to see through the storm and understand the progress. It's going to get here, and it looks to be ahead of schedule. We're all we got. With what happened last week on campus, the nation isn't going to point out the good, and they're going to look for the bad because it's supposedly more interesting. We've got to show the best of this university and be the best of this university.

With what's ahead, I've always said those games need to be split up. It's the two rivals back to back, and they need to be split because that's a difficult rebound from LSU to MSU. Looking at next year's schedule, I'm glad someone finally agreed with me. Going to Baton Rouge is an opportunity. There's nothing like Tiger Stadium, and you can embrace the experience and play well. Ole Miss is known to do that.

You go down there, lay it on the line for 60 minutes and see what happens.
