Holmes flips from Miss State to Southern Miss
Todd Monken. Today the Eagles got even more good news at Tylertown (MS) High ATH Tyre'oune Holmes made known his decision to flip from Mississippi State to Southern Miss.Southern Miss is on a dead sprint toward the finish line under first year head coach
Holmes a talented two-way, multi-position 5-foot-11, 170-pounder arrived at his decision several days ago following an official visit to Southern Miss on January 25th.
"This morning I called the Mississippi State coaches and told them I was de-committing," he said. "I'm committed to Southern Miss."
Holmes didn't reach his decision lightly, having been committed to the Bulldogs for more than two months.
"It didn't have anything to do with Mississippi State or their recruiting process," he said. "I just had to sit down and think about what was best for me and my family."
Southern Miss recruiting coordinator Steve Buckley relentlessly recruited Holmes and was a major factor in getting Holmes to begin looking at Southern Miss.
"It's been amazing working with Coach Buckley," he said. "He's been recruiting me hard, letting me know that they want me there. They let me know that they want me to be a part of everything that's going on over there."
During his official visit he was hosted by a familiar face, former high school teammate Oliver Bates.
During the visit two things really stood out to Holmes.
"They make you feel like you're important to them," he said of the Southern Miss staff. "The new coaching staff is amazing. They're headed back to the top, I can't wait to get over there and be a part of that."
Holmes did a bit of everything for Tylertown over the course of his career, but he'll focus on receiver at Southern Miss.
"Coach Monken sat me down and we talked," Holmes said. "He told me I could try whatever position I wanted. I'm going over there to play slot receiver and return kicks and punts."
