Holloway eyeing possible career in football

OXFORD, Miss. -- Murphy Holloway hasn't given up on basketball, but the former Ole Miss standout has come to the conclusion that his future might be brighter on the gridiron than it will ever be on the basketball court.

Holloway is just shy of 6-foot-6, making him too small to play power forward in the NBA, and his offensive arsenal isn't complex enough to warrant a spot in a fraternity of small forwards that includes the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Paul Pierce, Luol Deng, Paul George, Rudy Gay, Danny Granger and Nicolas Batum.

"If I could get on a good team like Ben Wallace did, I think I could last awhile," Holloway said, smiling. "But if you don't get on a great team and you end up losing, they might get rid of the 6-6 guy first trying to play (power forward)."

Holloway, Ole Miss' all-time leading rebounder, helped guide the Rebels to the NCAA tournament last month. He said his basketball agent has mentioned the possibility of playing professionally in Europe. However, the father of two said he has no interest in playing overseas.

Therefore, after workouts and meetings with several NFL franchises in Oxford earlier this month, Holloway is eyeing a spot in an NFL mini-camp next month, hoping he can impress enough to possibly begin a career on an NFL roster as a tight end.
