Alabama WR unaffected by Rebel loss

Many recruiting experts don't think one particular loss impacts a recruit's standing with a school, and for Hoover, Ala. wide receiver Maudrecus Humphrey, that's apparently the case.

Ole Miss has been recruiting Humphrey, and Humphrey has shown some mutual interest, including tripping to Oxford for the Alabama game, but the Rebels' upset loss to Auburn hasn't changed his interest.

"Ole Miss kind of had a rough day down at Auburn - I watched it on TV," Humphrey said of the Rebels' 33-20 loss where they once trailed 31-7. "Actually, they (Ole Miss) played a pretty good game except for giving up a few big plays."

One area of the team that has likely impacted Ole Miss, not only against Auburn, but in losses to South Carolina and Alabama, is the lack of a deep threat, and that's an area in which the Rebels are evaluating Humphrey to potentially help out next season.

Humphrey, a 6-foot-2, 185 pound wide receiver, is ranked a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and is listed with a 4.5 40-yard dash, but said he ran a sub-4.4 at one camp last summer.

He has numerous offers including Ole Miss, Kentucky, West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and several other non-BCS teams. He said he recently picked up a written offer from Nebraska.

"I don't have any favorites or anything right now," Humphrey said. "I'll probably just wait until closer to signing day to make any decision. I want to keep my head clear and focus on recruiting and not have any distractions right now. I'm focused on winning a state championship."

He said his Hoover team finished the regular season at 9-1 and is headed to the state playoffs.

Humphrey was one of about 75 or so recruits who was on the sideline prior to kickoff for the Alabama game on an unofficial visit.

"I didn't get to visit much with the coaches before or after the game," he said. "I guess the coaches were focused on the game. I know they really wanted to win it. Coach (Houston) Nutt did come in and talk with us (the group of unofficial visitors). He just welcomed us and told us he was glad to have us visit, but you could tell he was really focused on the game."

Humphrey also said he hasn't called Ole Miss coaches or received any calls from them recently.

"I guess they are focused on the season right now," he said. "I don't expect them to call this week. I mean I don't think if I was a coach and my team lost, that I'd be calling a recruit. But I do expect them to call after the season when everything settles down."

Humphrey said his Hoover team has started to throw a lot of deep balls his way late in the season and he sees where his talent could help a team in need of that type of a wide receiver.

"I'm going to look close at Ole Miss because I know they have that need," he said. "How they finish the season really isn't as important to me as me doing what's best for me. Ole Miss is a great program and it might be a situation where they I could help them out - fill a need for them."

Humphrey said he "has no idea" what his statistics are on the year.

He also hasn't made any decisions regarding where he'll take his five official visits.

Humphrey reports a 19 on his ACT and a 3.0 GPA.
