Bauer out for season with injury

DeSmet Jesuit High School head football coach Pat Mahoney made an announcement earlier today that coaches in any sport hates to make.
Mahoney said that senior offensive lineman Andy Bauer will miss his senior year in 2013 with a hip injury that will require season ending surgery.

Bauer, a four star recruit according to Rivals.com and a two time all-metro pick, made a verbal commitment to Ole Miss back in March to further his playing career and was being counted on this season to help lead the Spartans back to the playoffs after missing last season's playoff run with a concussion that he suffered in the second round of district against Hazelwood Central.
DeSmet lost in the Class 6 State Semi Finals to eventual champion Blue Springs 42-7.
"This is a hit to Andy not to us" stated Mahoney Thursday afternoon. "We some other kids that can step up for us, but when you lose a five star athlete like Andy; it is going to slow you down. The big hit is for Andy, who will lose his senior year, which is really a tough blow to anybody."
The torn labrum was brought to light after Bauer was hampered with what was thought to be a hamstring injury that happened during conditioning. After treatment, the injury was not getting better, so the team doctors had Bauer go in for an MRI and it was discovered that he had what is being called a congenital defect of the hip.
With this injury, the bone is rotating improperly in the hip and has been wearing away at his labrum to the extent that the labrum is now torn. The other issue is that the way it (the bone) is sitting, it is now causing damage to cartilage and tissue around the hip.
After consulting with the team doctors and a surgeon, it was determined that surgery needed to be done now instead of waiting until the end of the season.
It was discussed at length whether Bauer could get through the season with rehab.
"The surgeon was sure that rehabilitation was not going to work and surgery was the course to take at this time." Mahoney said.
Bauer is still slated to attend Ole Miss next year.
"He contacted Ole Miss to let them know what was going on and they told him not to worry about it, that he still had the offer and that they stand by him. I think that is honorable of them."
Bauer is also tabbed to play in the Under Armour All-American Game in January of 2014. Bauer will still be recognized by Under Armour and there is an outside chance that he may be able to participate in some of the events.
