Ole Miss offers Florida athlete

He isn't in the Rivals250 – yet – but that hasn't stopped college recruiters from pounding on the door of Cape Coral (Cape Coral HS), Fla. athlete Spencer Boyd.

Boyd already claims offers from Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Michigan, Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Central Florida and Marshall.

The Ole Miss offer got Boyd's attention.

"It's the SEC, that's the big thing about that offer," Boyd said on Thursday. "I don't know too much about Ole Miss, and I haven't talked to them yet, but I'm definitely interested."

Boyd, a 5-foot-10, 166 pound prospect is credited with a 4.56 40-yard dash, a time he ran while at the 2009 U.S. Army Combine in San Antonio, but like several other prospects who recorded less than their best at the combine, he says he's faster.

"I regularly run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds," he said. "Those times were really off, there was some real speed there but it didn't show up in the numbers.

Other prospects reported footing problems when being timed at the combine.

Timing is of the essence where Boyd projects to play – defensive back.

"I'm being recruited mostly as a defensive back," he said. "I'll probably end up a defensive back but some are saying both sides of the ball."

Last season he rushed for 620 yards (102 attempts) and had six scores. Defensively, he had 30 tackles and one interception in spite of missing his first four games with a hip injury.

Despite his lengthy offer sheet, Boyd isn't declaring any favorites.

"I'm pretty open to any school that has offered me," he said. "I'm not leaning one way or the other right now."

One particular event seemed to capture Boyd's attention when it comes to Ole Miss – as it does with most other recruits.

"They beat Florida," he said. "That tells me right there that they have a good football team and have a lot of potential. I haven't looked at them much, but I plan to. I will do my research."

As with many prospects who have several offers, Boyd doesn't plan to make an abundance of appearances at summer camps, although he did attend junior days at Central Florida, South Florida and at West Virginia. He also received invitations to attend Alabama and Tennessee's junior day, but wasn't able to attend due to other commitments.

"I'll probably camp at Florida, maybe try to get an offer from them," he said. "I might camp at Miami, but I expect them to offer real soon anyway. The coach has been out and I think that's the reason they haven't already offered. They want me to come over and I could get the offer then."

Boyd will also attend Notre Dame's spring game and said he may visit some schools on his way back from South Bend.

He said he looks forward to talking to Ole Miss coaches to find out more about the program when they are permitted to call recruits later this spring.

He reports a 3.3 GPA and a 1000 on his SAT.
