Commitment to Ole Miss a dream come true for Jones County LB

The words "Ole Miss" and "linebacker" are probably one of the most-used combinations of words used on Ole Miss message boards.

That trend didn't change late last week, when Jones County and former Louisville LB Daylen Gill made the decision to commit to Ole Miss, the school of his dreams.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

"When I was young, I used to go to a lot of Ole Miss football games, and I fell in love with the atmosphere up there. I also get to play with some of my old teammates up there, both from high school, and here at Jones County. Ashanti Cistrunk and I played together at Louisville, and Jonathan Haynes and Jamar Richardson played with me here.

My family won't have to travel too far to see me play. It's been a little while since I went up there back during the season, but we love it up there. Coach (Freddie) Roach and Coach (Jeff) Koonz were my two primary recruiters. Koonz is a great guy. I could ell he was about business when I first talked to him on the phone. He told me he came to Ole Miss to win a championship.

I knew then that I needed to play for this guy, and that he can help develop me into a great linebacker."

RUSSELL'S REACTION

Ole Miss clearly saw something they liked in Gill, who seemed at ease after making his decision. Stories like his are always interesting to see unfold, because there are thousands of kids every year that dream of playing for their school of choice, but only a select few actually get the chance to put their signature on the NLI in December or February.

As I said in a thread on the message board when he first committed, this seems eerily similar of the recruitment of Davion Taylor, the LB now at Colorado from Coahoma.

Taylor's first offer was Colorado. He committed to the Buffs, and signed with them. Ole Miss was too late when they offered.

If Ole Miss had waited to offer, or waited for Gill to camp in the summer, they could have again found themselves behind the times.

Instead, he's committed to Ole Miss now, and is counting down the days, hours, and minutes until he can sign and enroll.
