Donta Evans committed to Ole Miss more than a month ago.
He kept it secret until Sunday, maintaining the drama through a combination of color-coded cupcakes and social media posts.
The Lawrenceville (Archer), Ga., three-star standout chose Ole Miss over Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Auburn. Those schools, like Ole Miss, were represented by cupcakes at an elaborate announcement party Sunday afternoon.
"It was real hard to keep it quiet," Evans said. "I was excited about it. I was excited about the landshark defense, but I'm thankful I did it."
Evans visited Ole Miss in June.
"When I went up there the first time, I really wasn't expecting much out of it. It blew me away," Evans said. "I felt really like one of them. I knew it was the place for me. I was used to a warm environment and I love how they're committed to winning."
Ole Miss lost three linebackers off last year's roster. Denzel Nkemdiche and C.J. Johnson will be seniors this fall.
"Hopefully I can play my freshman year," Evans said. "That's my goal. I want to play early."
Evans said Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze encouraged him to take his official visits before National Signing Day on Feb. 3.
"He said you only get to do this once, but right now, I'm all 'Go Rebels,'" Evans said.
