The consensus opinion regarding the recruitment of Memphis four-star point guard Alex Lomax is Wichita State and Memphis lead for his services.

The Shockers and Tigers are certainly in the mix, but Lamarcus Golden believes another team leads for the Rivals150 product.

“I would say Ole Miss is the favorite,” said Golden, the director of Lomax’s AAU team, Team Penny. “It’s close to home. I would say Memphis and Missouri are next. Wichita State has jumped in there late and he likes Coach (Gregg) Marshall and what they’ve done.”

Those comments are made more interesting given the fact that Lomax, a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder from East High School, is due to arrive in Oxford this weekend for an official visit.

“I think he’s very serious about Ole Miss,” Golden said. “They’ve been recruiting him the longest outside of Vanderbilt and Missouri. He’s serious about it. I I think he’s a typical Andy Kennedy guard. He’s tough, hard-nosed and a leader. Having (Ole Miss freshman guard) Devontae Shuler there helps out because he knows Devontae from playing against him the last few years.

“He wants to win. Ole Miss has won consistently the past 10 years. Everything Alex does doesn’t show up in a stat sheet. Alex is a grinder. He’s tough. That’s what he loves about Ole Miss and that’s what Andy Kennedy loves about him.”

Lomax has already taken an official visit to Wichita State and an unofficial to Memphis. He has trips planned to Florida and Missouri.

“He wants to make a difference in a program,” Lomax said.

Golden said Lomax has benefited greatly from playing for Hardaway, a former NBA star who has returned to his hometown of Memphis to help develop local players.

“Penny is the type of guy who will run through walls to win games,” Golden said. “That’s what we’ve instilled in Alex. He hates losing more than he likes winning. He’ll do whatever it takes to win.”
