Millsaps College has named former Ole
Miss quarterback Romaro Miller as its quarterback coach after Miller
unsuccessfully attempted to play professional football since he finished his
eligibility with the Rebels following the 2000 season.
Miller was released recently by
the Calgary Stampeders.
Miller, who signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings
after going undrafted in 2001, saw little time on the
roster and even less on the playing field, was starting his second season with
the CFL when he was released. Miller also played for the NFL-Europe's Rhein Fire in 2003.
Miller had been Ole Miss' all time passing leader until he was
surpassed by Eli Manning, the first selection in the 2004 National Football
League draft.
Miller, 25, was acquired by Calgary in February in a trade
with the Ottawa Renegades, in a move that was supposed to provide the Stampeders
with a quarterback for the future.
However, despite what Miller described as excellent practices,
he struggled in the exhibition season and was released as the team made its
final cuts.
"I can't explain why things didn't work out," Miller said told
Canadian reporters after he was released. "I know my game is built around
accuracy and the last week and a half I was really coming around."
"During practice, I was unstoppable, but then in games I don't
know if I was pressing, or what, but I was missing passes that I would usually
never miss.
In pre-season appearances against Winnipeg and Edmonton,
Miller completed just five of 17 passes for 64 yards and two interceptions.
Miller had said he had hoped to get another
chance with a CFL team, but when that didn't work out, he decided to pursue a
coaching career.
Miller, who was highly recruited out of Shannon, Miss., signed
with Ole Miss in 1997 and saw action in only two games as a true freshman when
he backed up Stewart Patridge as Ole Miss improved from a 5-6 record in 1996 to
8-4 and a national ranking in 1997. In 1998, Miller started for the
Rebels, who went 6-5, and then defeated Texas Tech in the Independence Bowl.
Miller set four career marks and tied another while at Ole
Miss. He notched 35 career starts and had a career record of 22-13 as a
starter.

Prior to Manning's arrival, Miller had achieved a first in
2000 as he became the only player in Ole Miss to record two seasons of at least
2,000 yards passing and 2,000 yards of total offense. Miller finished the year
with 2,012 passing yards and 2,099 yards of total offense. During his sophomore
year in 1998, Miller passed for 2,273 yards and recorded 2,306 yards of total
offense. In 1999, while learning a new offense, Miller just missed the
2,000-yard mark, passing for 1,999 yards and registering 1,987 yards of total
offense.
Miller's 2,000-yard passing season was only the sixth in Ole
Miss history at the time. Kent Austin (1982), John Darnell (1989), Josh Nelson
(1994) and Stewart Patridge (1997) were the others to do so, however, Miller was
the only one to have two seasons with at least 2,000 yards passing. Miller's
2,099 yards of total offense marked just the eighth time Ole Miss had a player
accumulate more than 2,000 yards of total offense in a season, as Miller joined
former QB John Fourcade (1978-81) as the only other player at the time to have
two seasons with at least 2,000 yards of total offense.
