OXFORD | Rivals100 wide receiver A.J. Brown, who signed a football scholarship with Ole Miss in February, agreed to a contract with the San Diego Padres on Friday.
Brown, a two-sport talent from Starkville (Mississippi) High School, was taken by the Padres in the 19th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft.
The outfielder will continue with all his college football obligations and will report to the Padres for a short period of time each summer from 2016-2018. His first report date is August 2, and he returns to Oxford August 5 in time for preseason football camp.
The baseball contract ends his amateur status and ability to play college baseball with the Rebels, but it doesn't impact his amateur status in football.
Brown appeared in the Under Armour All-American games for football and baseball. He was the No. 53 player nationally in the 2016 Rivals.com football recruiting rankings and No. 3 player in the state of Mississippi.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder chose Ole Miss over Alabama and Mississippi State after a senior season with 83 catches for 1,371 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets went 14-1 and won the 2015 6A state title.
