Alex Faniel has a list in Hawaii.

The Ole Miss quarterback commit from Virginia is playing in the inaugural Polynesian Bowl, featuring the nation’s top high school players with Polynesian heritage and other ancestries. The game is Saturday in O’ahu, and Faniel is trying to help the Rebels in the days leading up to the event.

“They gave me a list of guys we are looking at,” Faniel said about his recruiting efforts. “Anyone who is undecided and on my list I stay in their ear about Ole Miss. We have a Polynesian pipeline starting, and I’m trying to open players’ eyes to that part of the country.

“With Polynesians, it’s first about family and comfort. Ole Miss is a place they can have some thought of family.”

In addition to Faniel, Ole Miss signed Hawaiian junior college quarterback Jordan Ta’amu out of New Mexico Military Institute, and Samoan Rommel Mageo just completed his graduate transfer season with the Rebels.

Ole Miss assistant Ben Aigamaua is also Samoan, giving Faniel an extra layer of familiarity.

“It helps that we have a Samoan coach on staff, and he relates to the players,” Faniel said. “Since some players have chosen Ole Miss, it broadens things and opens the eyes for others. If you can feel comfortable there, then it’s possible.”

Ole Miss recently offered running back Cyrus Habibi-Likio, who is in Hawaii with Faniel, and the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder is planning a visit to see the Rebels. Ole Miss is also deciding whether to offer offensive guard Poutasi Poutasi.

“With the one weekend left next week before National Signing Day where we can visit because we can’t take a visit this weekend, I’m going to Ole Miss for my trip,” Faniel said. “Anyone with interest I’m trying to get to visit with me. That helps because they will know I’m going to be there. It gives some semblance of home.”

Faniel has been solid with the Rebels since committing last summer, but there’s been a bit of coaching influx, including a change at offensive coordinator. Sam Houston State offensive coordinator Phil Longo replaced Dan Werner following the season.

Faniel and Longo recently had a lengthy phone conversation. A home visit didn’t happen because of Faniel’s travel plans.

“He’s really experienced and has a nice resume,” Faniel said of Longo. “His quarterbacks have put up big numbers. It gets your eyes big as a quarterback. I talked with him and got reassurance that they still want me. He said I’m still their guy.”
