Ole Miss announced offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Matt Luke as the interim head coach on Thursday after Hugh Freeze resigned his post.

Luke has been the offensive line coach under Freeze since 2012 and also held the same position from 2002-2005. Luke was a three-year starter and team captain with the Rebels as a player from 1995-1998.

Here are the quick hits from Luke's introductory press conference on Monday afternoon.

Luke opened by thanking chancellor Jeffery Vitter and athletics director Ross Bjork. "I'm so excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach at the University of Mississippi."

Luke thanked his wife, Ashley, and family for their sacrifices and then talked about family memories of Ole Miss.

"It's a job I've prepared my whole life for, and I'm certain I'm the right man to lead this program at this time."

He mentioned the players next and said the focus is on making sure the players are prepared and have everything necessary to be successful. That the players are the first priority.

Luke will hire an offensive line coach so he can focus on being the head coach.

He thanked fans and friends for the texts, calls and support.

"It's time for Ole Miss to move forward together. It's your university. It's my university. It's our university. I can't wait to walk down that tunnel and lock the Vaught together."

All staff will remain intact, and 95 percent of the system will remain the same.

He said he's taking this chance one game at a time and not looking ahead.

"We had a great five-year run (with Hugh Freeze) and my focus is on getting the players ready to play. That should be the only thing you concern yourself with."

Luke found out about the move at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

He got emotional talking to his father when he found out he had the job.

"I'm excited about the challenge. My 14 years of experience here with me seeing it done right and wrong. I know that experience is immeasurable."

"I think (the experience I had as a player under probation) creates a unique bond."

The response to Luke from the players has been positive.

Luke says he is taking things from lots of different coaches in developing his style including Freeze, David Cutcliffe, Phillip Fulmer, Ed Orgeron, Tommy Tuberville and others.

"To be a successful coach is you have to go to your talent. You have to fit their skill set. Using the players correctly makes a good coach."

McGriff increased the discipline with the defense during spring practice. The details were much better, and the little things have been much more positive.

The hope to name an offensive line coach is by the end of the week.

"This experience and handling adversity is bringing this team closer. Playing for the guy beside you is what motivates people."

Keeping emotions in check to the point of being able to do the job has been hardest challenge to this point.

"You can't put a price tag on family," Luke said, when asked about South Carolina pursuing him for a position during the offseason.

Luke said he was surprised by the Freeze situation, but he "didn't have time before having to move on and be there for the players."
