OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss senior linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche remained in the intensive care unit of Baptist Memorial Hospital - North Mississippi Wednesday night, sources confirmed to RebelGrove.com.
Nkemdiche, a former All-Southeastern Conference selection and a freshman All-American, was admitted to the hospital on Monday, according to sources. As of Wednesday night, Nkemdiche was conscious.
The reason for his hospitalization is unclear. Nkemdiche, who leads Ole Miss with 53 tackles so far this season, did not report with his teammates on Sunday when the 25th-ranked Rebels reconvened from an open date to begin preparations for Saturday's 2:30 p.m. home game versus No. 17 LSU.
Nkemdiche was found on Monday and taken to the hospital, where he was admitted, according to sources.
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said earlier Wednesday Nkemdiche is "dealing with a personal matter."
"We are going to walk through it with him," Freeze said. "…When issues come up that you need to get through that involve one of our players and anything with their family, we just want to support them and help them through it."
