The Mailbag, presented by The Westin Jackson, Edition 5

It's Wednesday, so that means it's time for The Mailbag, presented by The Westin Jackson, Edition 5.

I asked for questions here on RebelGrove.com and on Twitter. Once again, you responded.

So here we go...

From MarvMerchants: 1a. How did you and Chase meet Russell? 1b. How did negotiations begin and obviously settle? You should do a whole pod on that, or please link if you already have. 2. Does mcgriff know he is done? His claim was recruiting, but there was a defensive recruit who didn’t even know who our DC was.

If I recall correctly, Russell had emailed Chase on several occasions and we contracted him out to help us while he worked in Ohio for that first season. He obviously did very well, and we began having some conversations about moving him to Oxford. I don't know that I want to get into negotiations. We put some things together and made it work.

Does McGriff know he's gone? You'd have to ask him that. I'm sure his focus is on improving the defense and honoring his contract, which has another year on it. However, I am not privy to his thoughts on the matter.

From LarryJoe1979: who is the one or more than one if you want non-athlete celebrity that if you met them you would fanboy out at least a little?

I don't know that there is anyone who meets that criteria for me. I would probably geek out a bit if I could talk to the actors in The Hangover or John Krasinski from The Office and also Jack Ryan. I don't know that any music artist would cause me to freak out. That's sort of pathetic. I should go to the movies more, I suppose.

From RebelFanatic91: While it was only Kent State, does the play from Wiley, Sheppard, Tisdale, WInters, and etc help improve the defensive line this season moving forward? While the depth isn't there, what is your opinion on how the young linebckers can do the rest of the season and into next season (Ruggs, J.Jones, Hess)?Players that may have surprised you? Keidron Smith? How about the little guy, Tylan Knight?

Look, it was indeed Kent State, but I thought, watching on TV some and on my device some, that Ole Miss' defensive line was more active. Will that carry over moving forward? I don't know. We shall see. I like Ruggs and Jones a lot; I think they're building blocks. I liked what I saw from Hess in the spring. As for Ole Miss' linebacker crew, that's a start. Smith has been a very pleasant surprise. I haven't seen enough of Tylan Knight to make a judgment. The guy that stuck out from Day One for me was Elijah Moore. I really like his game.

From Hannitized: Any chance O looks past us?  Can we PLEASE have a couple of 30 second bits/conversations on the podcast each day that you feel State people will have with Mullen coming back to town?

Come on. I've got a better chance of swimming with a school of mermaids than Ole Miss has of Orgeron overlooking them.

As for the podcast idea, that's not a bad idea, my friend.

From OxonianReb: Preface, I’m not advocating or defending Hugh Freeze here, but I’m curious to your thoughts on an angle rarely discussed. We’ve talked about the trajectory the program had Freeze continued to be head coach. But it’s never brought up the priority Freeze had made for the 2019 class. I’ve always heard from those close to the program that Freeze had identified that class as a building block and had focused a lot of his efforts on rebuilding with it. What does Freeze’s 2019 class look like in that scenario and is he given 2019 if he has a good class incoming?

Assuming the NCAA issues were the same and escort/erotic massagegate doesn't happen? I am of the opinion the on-the-field product was going to deteriorate under Freeze. I think, in your scenario, this would have been his final season. The 2019 class, in my opinion, would have been a transition class.

From Mr. Sunglasses: How often are players the sources to stories?

I don't discuss sources. It's a slippery slope.

From eafinsup: Over/under on Texas tech now?

I haven't seen them, but they're clearly playing better. I'd guess they're more like a six-win club now. First-game overreactions are as old as time. I never said I wasn't guilty of them either.

From Swag4Heisman: Should sane Ole Miss fans regret we ended up with Mr. Matt Luke instead of Mr. Jeremy Pruitt?

In my opinion, no. The jury is out on Luke, obviously. However, I don't foresee a scenario where Pruitt doesn't fail in Knoxville.

From Grovin1551: What is it indicative of that this team needs an entire half and halftime to make the necessary adjustments to beat FCS teams?

My opinion: It's a confluence of things. There is a lack of confidence, I believe. Further, there's a tentativeness at times. Phil Longo's offense is what it is: Chase space, take what the defense gives you. Wesley McGriff's situation appears different.

From MilneW: Why doesn’t the Ole Miss Athletics Association invest more in making the band bigger and better?

You'd have to ask them. As SEC bands go, it's amazing how small it is. I can't speak to the quality of it, but I will say when you see Alabama or LSU's band, one can't help but be reminded how small Ole Miss' is. I suppose it's a budgetary thing.

From Naplesbeliever: What is MSU’s identity now?

I sense sarcasm. Listen, if you're using me as a football expert, that's on you. I openly admit I don't watch nearly as much as most do. I'm hired for my writing ability, my ability to produce interesting copy. As for State, I still think they're a physical team who is going to try to bully the line of scrimmage. However, Nick Fitzgerald can't throw, and that's a problem for the Bulldogs moving forward.

From DeuceMcAllister22: Was Luke Hired strictly because of the Egg bowl win? Or was the ultimate deciding factor, if we lose who do we hire?if I told u you could have hair, but the only option was to be a lice infested dread lock look of Steve Robertson would u take it or just continue to be bald?

We've covered this ground, but here goes. Was it the only factor? No. Luke had impressed all season. However, beating Mississippi State created an emotional avalanche of sorts that, in my very educated opinion, changed the process. It is my opinion Ross Bjork and Co. were going to hire Dave Doeren from North Carolina State.

I'd much rather be bald than look like that. I'm far too ugly to comment on another man's looks, but offered that trade, I'd decline.

From PowderBlues: What are your thoughts on the Meyer situation going forward? He clearly learned nothing as he publicly stated that he disagrees with the university’s findings and his punishment. How do you feel about media, particularly ESPN, white-washing his behavior and carrying on business as usual with him?

I'm disgusted by the Urban Meyer situation. As long as he wins, Ohio State doesn't care, apparently. As for media, there are people on that beat and nationally who I'll never speak to again. I'm appalled at what they've done (or not done) in the wake of this story.

From joegunn28: Did you cry/tear up when Tiger Woods won the Tour Championship?

No, but it got a little dusty when Victor Martinez ended his career with an infield single in Detroit the other day. Weird, I know.

From Hannitized: Third and final question....if you owned the NFL franchise would you be stupid enough to sign Dak or Jamies to one of these monster contracts? IMO your franchise would be a disaster for a decade...IF you signed Winston would you offer “crab” specials at the stadium every week?  Go all in “Forrest Gump” style...crab cake week, fried soft shell night, surf & turf all u can eat week, crab fingers night(Winston’s favorite) etc....

No, I would've been scared of Winston's character and Prescott's lack of an elite NFL arm. A crab special would be funny, if and only if I was planning to cut him soon. However, the ideas are hilarious.

From Rbb2010: What do you make of our 2nd half defense being so much better than the 1st half defense?

I simply don't know. My guess is there's a quick adjustment that is made after consulting with other defensive coaches, but I just don't know. It's odd.

From DENTUREMAN: After seeing the Bama ATM game do you think people are being harsh about UM's performance against Satan and his team? And also seeing Texas Tech perform better the past two weeks.

I think it's certainly possible people overreact to teams' performances, Ole Miss' included, against Alabama. However, that was a remarkably awful performance, and Ole Miss coaches acknowledged as much.

From Thursday at City: Why did Ross Bjork favor Dorean over Charlie Strong?

Per sources, Ole Miss officials liked his personality, his penchant to grind, his no-nonsense approach and his track record.

From wtcarr: One for the common man: If you could pick one chain to be put into Oxford, what is it? For me, it’s Publix. I’ll hang up and listen.

Publix or Whole Foods or Fresh Market. Any would be great.

From P. Cage: Have you ever heard of a sadder story than that of Jake Epping and Sadie Dunhill ?Put yourself in Jake’s shoes. Could you have passed on the opportunity to go back one last time and simply not make the trip to the school book depository, but do everything else the same ?

No, it's the saddest thing ever. Jake goes back in time in an attempt to change history and he finds his soulmate in the process. It's sort of like my mermaid scenario I posed to Jay and Gabe on GPITS. If the only way you could be with the woman you love is to become a merman or live in an earlier generation, would you do it?

I couldn't sit there in Dallas, living in bliss with Sadie, knowing the president was going to be assassinated downtown. I'd have to do something, I believe.

At least they had some time. It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, right?

From North_MSReb23: MLB Postseason is fixing to get under way. Post season predictions? How awesome would a Cubs vs Red Sox World Series be? Return of Theo, the cursed clubs, Chicago and Boston markets. Would be great for baseball.

I'll make predictions on Sunday. FOX would LOVE Red Sox-Cubs, but I just don't think the Cubs can get there.

From CityRebel: What needs to happen for the remainder of this year, with recruiting, and the 2019 season for Luke to be fired after the '19 season and we hire a new coach? Not only your thoughts on records and recruiting, but does a new Chancellor and AD have to be in place for this to happen? If Vitter and Bjork are still here, does it have to be much worse for them to admit they made a mistake?

I mean, if you told me this team bottomed out and went 4-8 and next year's team went 2-10 and recruiting was clearly poor, I'd say that led to a change. I do not expect that, however, and I fully expect Luke to get a long opportunity to prove himself.

I think Ole Miss needs a new chancellor; I'm on record there. I think that's likely coming. As for Bjork, I'm in the camp of people who believe he's done a much, much, much better job than many give him credit for.

The RevReb: If next year is as bad as you anticipate, say 2-10, how does this affect your subscription base? Does a lousy season increase subscriptions because people want to know what you think or does it reduce them because people aren't interested?

We've consistently grown, through good and bad, knock on wood. I think it's imperative we put out a good, entertaining product. We can't control wins and losses. Well, Chase can, but I can't.

From kmreb: Where is the best SEC school to cover a game? Experience/Hospitality/Access as factors.Same question but favorite non SEC school?

My favorites, in terms of parking/hospitality/access/etc. are Ole Miss, LSU and Arkansas. Some places, like Georgia, Florida and Mississippi State, make parking ridiculous. I love covering Vanderbilt games. Still near campus and walk. As for non-SEC schools, I always enjoyed covering games at Florida State. Texas was OK. USC was neat. Fresno State was a dump. I don't remember much about Syracuse. Purdue was great for basketball. Really, we just want good wifi, decent parking and coffee. Our jobs are boring.

From jasongreer: To what degree has the FBI investigation into NCAA BB leveled the playing field in recruiting? How long will the effects last?

My opinion: The playing field hasn't been leveled all that much. Coaches are just scared now and boosters have to be careful. I think it'll be the wild, wild West again soon.

From FireFighterReb: When you talk to your college football sources what do they say is the main problem with our defense?

They question the discipline of the scheme and they wonder how an SEC school so soon removed from the Sugar Bowl has so little talent and depth.

From RebHedge: Do you believe Sirhan Sirhan acted alone?

After listening to the RFK Tapes, yes, I do.

From TX via TN Rebel: Give us some of the play by play on the internal debate of telling Chase to leave during one of the weather delays and watching the rest from home. What a sad, sad day of OM football... up 1 TD going into the 4th Q of a game marred by weather delays and mismanaged gameday concessions.

I never had that conversation with Chase. I doubt he ever considered leaving. We had one conversation during the game and he asked me to give his column an edit. That was the extent of it.

From tdualm: Strictly as a former beat writer, which story would you rather have available to you this week - Ole Miss vs. Coach O in BR, or Dan Mullen returns to the wilderness that is Moo-U?

Oh, that's easy. Mullen's return to Starkville could be compelling drama. The Orgeron-Ole Miss angle is played out.

It's hard to question the great Duke University scholar Kyrie Irving who says he isn't sure if it's flat or round. How can I, a lowly ULM graduate, question Irving? I can't. I just can't.

That's the one. It was an egregious mistake. For the record, per sources very close to Avery's recruiting, then-Ole Miss offensive line coach Matt Luke wanted to offer Avery. He was overruled.

They talk too much for my tastes, and I'm just not a big fan of Houston, if I'm being completely honest. It's hot, muggy and wet all the time. It takes forever to get anywhere and I always have bad Uber experiences there. I hope the Astros lose quickly in the playoffs.

Personally, I don't think so. He's a good coach. I think he'll have to change some of his public stuff as it pertains to religion and faith and all of that if he's ultimately going to be successful.

1. He couldn't win the big one anyway.

2. He's just a Yankee.

3. We upgraded to Moorhead.

I'd have to say Safeco Park in Seattle. There or Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. I've been to a lot of parks, but those are two that look cool on television. Oh, and Coors Field in Denver. That might be my next Cubs-related trip.

Ah, young Benjamin, I love your inquisitive mind. There's no need to deflect this question on the lovely Miss Cora. Contrary to the negative propaganda produced by companies such as Colgate, who work to kill the dreams of youngsters everywhere, yes, the Tooth Fairy is real. In fact, I consulted the website hambahaldjus.ee, which provided a great number of specific answers regarding the Tooth Fairy.

Enjoy. See ya soon, Cora.

Where does the Tooth Fairy live? High in the sky above clouds in the Tooth Fairy Land, which you cannot see from the Earth.

What does the Tooth Fairy look like? The Tooth Fairy is an average-height woman with a very delicate skin and beautiful long hair. She has sparkling white teeth and a charming smile. Sometimes, but not always, she wears wings. If you close your eyes, you can imagine what the Tooth Fairy looks like – she will definitely smile at you kindly.

Can I get a photo of the Tooth Fairy?Unfortunately, no one has managed to photograph her, because nothing but an empty spot remains in the photo. However, she has been drawn a lot and you can draw a picture of her, too.

Does the Tooth Fairy really exist?Of course, she does. Every night, the Tooth Fairy visits thousands of children and collects their teeth – all these children believe in her. Their parents are also surprised if the tooth has disappeared by the morning and a little gift has been left in return.

How does the Tooth Fairy know where I live? She has little helpers who look up each child’s address from wise magical books.

How does the Tooth Fairy travel from one child to another? The Tooth Fairy can fly, of course. Sometimes, when she flies, she leaves behind a glowing stripe in the nocturnal sky, which the grownups mistake for falling stars. Most children are sound asleep by that time.

How does the Tooth Fairy get in through the window?Magic and supernatural powers are a part of the Tooth Fairy’s life – she can freely move through window glass, but she can only do that when you are asleep.

Where did the Tooth Fairy get her magical powers? She was born with these powers. Her little wand is also very important to her, as she is unable to do almost any magic without it.

How does the Tooth Fairy know that a child has lost a tooth? When a child loses a tooth, a little bell starts to ring in the Tooth Fairy Land, letting the Tooth Fairy know of a lost tooth. As someone is always losing a tooth somewhere in the world, the bell never stops ringing. That is why the helpers of the Tooth Fairy are constantly on watch and look it up from the map who has lost a tooth, and prepare a list of children whom the Tooth Fairy must visit during the night.

How does the Tooth Fairy know that I am sleeping and not only pretending to be asleep? It is very easy and a part of the magical powers of the Tooth Fairy. But she can also tell that children are asleep when they are breathing deeply and dreaming. If the Tooth Fairy doubts whether you are asleep or not, she simply waits a while.

Does the Tooth Fairy also have a family? She has a very big family – everyone who help her in her work. They all care about each other and you are very important to them as well.

Can I also become a Tooth Fairy when I grow up?When you grow up, you can become a Tooth Fairy as well as her helper. For that, you have to take good care of your teeth, and be kind and polite to others. For the time being, however, you can just enjoy being a child, finding new friends, going to school and playing.

Does the Tooth Fairy know Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? The Tooth Fairy has met them, but as they all have important magical things to do, they do not have very much time to get together. Sometimes, however, they do meet and discuss which children have been especially good.

What does the Tooth Fairy do with the teeth she has collected from children? All teeth are washed and polished very carefully until they become glossy white. Then, the helpers of the Tooth Fairy place all teeth into special little boxes. The collected teeth are used to build almost everything in the Tooth Fairy Land. Sometimes, these teeth shine so bright that they can be seen as stars in the nocturnal sky and, if you wish, you can give all of them names.

Will the Tooth Fairy also come to me if I have lost my tooth and cannot find it?Of course, she will. Sometimes, children swallow the tooth in their sleep or lose it somewhere while playing. As soon as you lose a tooth, the Tooth Fairy will know about it. She usually sends one of her helpers to look for the missing tooth. Often, children write on a little piece of paper that they have lost their tooth and leave it under their pillow. That paper will do as well to have the Tooth Fairy visit the child at night.

When did the Tooth Fairy start collecting teeth? The Tooth Fairy’s mother started to collect children’s teeth a long-long time ago, even before your mom and dad were little. The exact year is not known, but, back then, children did not sleep on soft pillows as you do. They often had to settle for nothing but hay and dry leaves.

Where does the Tooth Fairy get all the money she distributes to children? The Tooth Fairy is helped by many kind grownups who secretly send her money. When you grow up, you can also be so kind and donate the Tooth Fairy some money, which she can distribute to children.

Can the Tooth Fairy also bring something else instead of money? She mostly brings money, because she believes that children are smart enough to save it up for the things they desire the most. Sometimes, she also brings little toys or sweets. Once, she even brought one child a puppy, but she will probably not do that again, since it is very difficult to fly with a little puppy under her arm.

Why didn’t the Tooth Fairy take away my tooth last night?Even though the Tooth Fairy can fly really fast, she does not always make it to all children in just one night, because, at some places, she has to wait for the child to fall asleep. Sometimes, she is held back by bad weather. If the Tooth Fairy does not reach you during the first night, she will come some other night – as long as you leave your tooth somewhere where she can see it and do not lose hope.

What is the Tooth Fairy’s favourite food? She likes many kinds of food as long as it is healthy – she is particularly fond of fruit and vegetables. Next time, you can leave a carrot or an apple by your bedside for the Tooth Fairy.

What is the Tooth Fairy’s real name? The Tooth Fairy does not have a real name as children do, but children have given her many nicknames (Flossy, Maria, Vicki, Carley, Katie, Marcus, Roberta, Julia, Hammond, Keith, Kathy, Melissa, Mabel, Winky, Samantha, etc.). You can also make up a name for the Tooth Fairy.

How many teeth are collected in one day?Every night, the Tooth Fairy collects about three hundred thousand teeth that children have lost.

Is there only one Tooth Fairy or are there several of them? There is only one Tooth Fairy, who collects people’s teeth. Sometimes, people mistake the Tooth Fairy’s helpers for her, which causes some confusion.

When will I start to lose my baby teeth? It may come as a surprise to you when your tooth becomes loose and lost, but everybody likes that surprise. It is not possible to say when exactly children will start to lose their baby teeth. Some children lose their first teeth at the age of three, others at the age of seven. On the average, children start to lose their baby teeth when they are five to six years old.

Does it hurt to lose a tooth? It does not have to hurt when the tooth is ready to come out and is pulled out correctly. In that case, you will only feel a slight pinch and the joy over the lost tooth will make the fear go away instantly. Sometimes, the farthest teeth are a bit more stubborn – even if new teeth are already growing under them. In that case, you have to visit a dentist who will pull the tooth out quickly and without any pain whatsoever. Dentists are your friends, so do not be afraid of them. When the tooth is being pulled out, you have to stand still, or else the dentist cannot grab the tooth well.

How could I get rid of my loose tooth? There are many ways to get rid of a tooth. Some children have their mom or dad tie a strong thread around their tooth. The other end of the thread is tied to a door handle. Then, someone pushes the door open and the thread pulls out the tooth – for that to work, the thread must be very tight around the tooth. That is the quickest way to lose a tooth. Other children bite an apple and the apple twists the loose tooth out of the mouth. Of course, you can also move your tooth back and forth and twist it in all directions, but this will probably hurt and take too long. When pulling out a tooth, you should hold a paper napkin between your fingers to prevent the tooth from slipping away. Once the tooth is out, the wound may bleed a little – rinse your mouth a few times with cold water and it will stop bleeding. Do not be afraid of that blood, because it is bad blood and must come out.

Be patient – the tooth will only come out when it is the right time, because it is pushed by a permanent tooth growing underneath it.

Can I keep my lost tooth? If you really want to do that, please leave the Tooth Fairy a written note, so she does not take your tooth along with her. You will still get a surprise for your tooth. The Tooth Fairy Land needs many teeth and if all children kept their teeth to themselves, the Tooth Fairy Land would fall apart and disappear altogether.

How old is the Tooth Fairy?Even though she looks very young and is sometimes mistaken for a child, she is actually very-very-very old. She is so old that she cannot even remember her age anymore, but she remembers her birthday, which is on January 1st.

Do animals also lose their teeth and does the Tooth Fairy collect their teeth? Many animals do change their teeth as they grow older, but the Animal Tooth Fairy collects their teeth. And believe it or not – she also leaves a little treat for the animal.

How can the Tooth Fairy take away the tooth from under my pillow without waking me up?Due to her magical powers, she does not have to lift the pillow, but the tooth crawls out from under the pillow by itself. Nevertheless, it is better to leave the tooth somewhere where she can see it. That way, the Tooth Fairy can save her magical powers and fly faster.

P.S. The Tooth Fairy celebrates her name day on February 9th, which is called the Bone Pain Day in the Estonian folk calendar.
